Fitness failure: Does your gym have these 2 things?

Did you know that more than 64 million Americans have a gym membership? While 21% of those gym members report working out daily, 18% say they never use their membership. What a waste of money— not to mention that an unused gym membership likely means that fitness goals have gone by the wayside.

We’ve got great news for you, though. When looking for a gym, two important traits practically guarantee your fitness success. We’re not talking about Pelotons, group classes, or even personal trainers.

Don’t spend another cent on gym memberships until you read this article. In the next few minutes, you’ll learn the two most important things to consider when choosing a place to work out so you get the most out of your membership.

Convenience is key

Of those who go to the gym, 66% work out on their lunch hour or between 5 and 11 pm. Convenience is critical to fitness success. How often have you walked past your overflowing laundry basket and thought, “I’ll do it later”? Your laundry is right there— but since it’s not an enjoyable task, it’s often left until you’re one pair of underwear away from going commando. If your gym isn’t close to your school, work, or home, forget about it.

An article in the Wall Street Journal shared a report by data firm Dstillery, which found that gym members (who actually attend the gym) live an average of 4 miles from their gym. Those who attend five times per week live an average of 3.7 miles from the gym, while those who go once a month live 5.1 miles away. In the grand scheme of things, 1.4 miles isn’t much, but it makes a major difference in attendance.

Atmosphere is everything

Dstillery’s research shows one major exception to the distance rule. People are willing to travel further for luxury (read: more expensive) gyms. Members of more expensive gyms travel up to 5.7 miles for regular workouts.

You don’t need to shell out tons of cash to ensure you’ll go, but you must choose a gym you’re excited to attend. Only you can decide what’s important to you in a gym. Is it cleanliness? Virtual classes? A Smoothie King next door? Amenities like a sauna or pool? Make a list of what’s important to you, and don’t compromise when choosing your gym. After all, your fitness goals are at stake.
